Acquisition de donnée en continu sur la matière particulaire de la Baie estuarienne de Marennes-Oléron pendant le bloom printaniter planctonique : effet sur le taux de filtration de l'huître Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Heral, Maurice; Razet, Daniel; Prou, Jean.
The continuous obtention of different signals has been achieved for 9 days at a -fixed station during May 1988. The speed and direction of the currents have been monitoring concurrently with "in situ" turbidity and fluorescence in relation with the meteorological conditions. The concentration in particulate matter and the planktonic fluorescence fluctuated in direct relation with the water depth, the speed of the current and with the origin of the water masses. The oysters submitted to these large fluctuated conditions showed not constant filtration rate. The filtration calculated by turbidimeters (2 1 h-l g-1 dry weight) was three time less than the one achieved with fluorimeters (61 h-l g-1 dry weight). The filtration rate were fluctuated but not in...

Assessment of the quantities of herbicides and nutrients brought down by the river Charente to the coast and modelling of the dispersion of atrazine in the Marennes-Oleron bay ArchiMer
Munaron, Dominique; Dubernet, Jf; Delmas, F; Stanisiere, Jean-yves; Scribe, P.
Our study aims at making progress the estimate of herbicide and nutrient inputs to the Marennes-Oleron bay which could influence summer oysters mortalities, and to bring, a better understanding of the impact on coastal ecosystems by modelling the dynamics of these compounds in the shellfish-farming area. The development of a strategy adapted to the river Charente and its estuary reveals that agricultural activity on the watershed area is omnipresent, as well on the level of the nitrogen as on the one of herbicides contributions. It is thus necessary to specify Charente fluxes, which is the main tributary of the Marennes-Oleron bay, in order to better characterize its impact on shell fish-farming activity. Hydrodynamic modelling will constitute an...

Croissance de l'huître creuse Crassostrea gigas dans le bassin de Marennes-Oléron de 1987 à 1998 ArchiMer
Le Moine, Olivier; Geairon, Philippe.
This report aims to study the oyster Crassostrea gigas growth and production over a 12 years time's span in the Bay of Marennes Oleron. Results of 12 years of oyster growth did not show any significant oyster biological productivity decrease, nor trend. In contrast, annual growth showed a large variability, which will be correlated with environmental conditions. Moreover, annual growth variability was greater than the variability due to site location, but the Ronce experimental site. The later, located in the south west part of the Bay of Marennes Oleron, has been the leading oyster growth site since 1989. The annual shell growth variability was greater than oyster dry meat weight fluctuation. Both 1990 and 1991 years were characterized by the largest...

Modèle énergétique uniboite de la croissance des huîtres (Crassostrea gigas) dans le bassin de Marennes-Oléron ArchiMer
Bacher, Cedric; Heral, Maurice; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Razet, Daniel.
The growth of oysters (Crassostrea gigas) is modeled in order to study the trophic capacity of the Bay of Marennes Oléron. Total seston and amount of protids, lipids, and carbohydrates converted to energy are the environmental factors taken into account. Time series of these variables are derived during 2 yr with a daily time step from a linear regression including the tidal velocity, the height of the water column, and the wind velocity. A model of the energetic budget based on assimilation and respiration terms and depending on the previous time series is run to simulate the individual growth of an oyster. The knowledge of the number of oysters, the flow of water entering the bay, and the volume of the bay allows us then to estimate that 7% of the...

Seasonal changes in carbohydrate metabolism and its relationship with summer mortality of Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) in Marennes-Ole'ron bay (France) ArchiMer
Soletchnik, Patrick; Faury, Nicole; Goulletquer, Philippe.
This paper investigates the biological responses of Crassostrea gigas under traditional culture conditions on a mudflat in Marennes-Oleron bay. Summer mortality has been regularly observed in recent years in oysters reared using "on bottom" culture conditions. The present study attempts to provide a better understanding of the mortality phenomenon through biological parameters. Classical 'field parameters' such as mortality and growth rates, and quality index (dry meat weight/ dry shell weight x 1000) were monitored. Additional parameters, as biochemical composition of oyster meat and glucose incorporation capacity, were included as potential new bioindicators. The work highlighted a critical timing (May-June) preceding the summer mortality and...

Summer mortality of the Pacific cupped oyster Crassostrea gigas in the Bay of Marennes-Oleron (France) ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe; Soletchnik, Patrick; Le Moine, Olivier; Razet, Daniel; Geairon, Philippe; Faury, Nicole.
A comprehensive research program has been developed since 1995 to focus on C. gigas abnormal mortality rates occurring regularly during the summer period in the Bay of Marennes Oleron (France). Several subprojects were carried out including in-vitro ecophysiological studies to asses l) the relationship between reproductive status, scope for growth and mortality, 2) effects of stress temperature on physiological functions. Meanwhile, field studies concerned monitoring surveys of calibrated oyster populations at various emersion time and geographic sites. A database was developed and incorporated into a geographic information system (GIS) to overlay several layers of information and establish relationship among environmental parameters and mortality rates....
